Addition and Subtraction
Addition and Subtraction – still from video – 2016

Double Bind is a curated group show that has the participating artists randomly assigned another of the group whose artistic practice they must respond to.

In the 2016 iteration of the show I was assigned Sarah Duyshart and made this video work in response to her search for moments of quiet beauty through spacial interventions.

Her previous works have sometimes included machine induced motion and change and so I used a large vibrating table to cause a puck of pigment to leave its mark on a sheet of drawing paper. The paper pushes back and slowly destroys the puck as it’s own pristine surface is covered with the residue of this violence. By shifting time and scale the process becomes an internalised biological experience.

Acknowledgement of Country

I respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which I live, work and make art. This is Stolen Country, the sovereignty of which was never ceded.

I pay my respects to Elders past present and emerging and stand in solidarity with all First Nation peoples, and recognise their continuing connection to Land, Waters and Culture.

Always was, always will be.
